Past Tense

Ceres Gallery, 547 W. 27th Street, New York City, is presenting a solo exhibition of Photographic Montages by Roslyn Rose entitled, “Past Tense” from February 26 through March 22. There will be two receptions to meet the artist: Saturday, March 1, 2 to 5 pm and Thursday, March 6, 6 to 8 pm.

Old photographs can inspire real or imagined recollections of the past. Roslyn Rose is aware that memories may be an illusion, but finding an old photograph of three people in a ‘used books’ store started her quest to interpret the personal reminiscences a photograph can suggest and resulted in her series, “Past Tense.”

She asked friends and relatives to allow her to copy their favorite old photos. Each picture suggested a story from the past, but Ms. Rose choose to reinvent another context for each scenario. Integrating early 20th century portraits with contemporary images revealed intimate moments in time and place. She is “...presenting in plain sight what does...
